Description
Sunton House is a house dating from circa 1710, located on Marlborough Road, Sunton. It is constructed of brick, with flint detailing and stone quoins to the ground floor, and brick to the upper floor. The roof is tiled. The building comprises a main east-west block containing the principal rooms, and a rear wing to the west, which originally housed a breakfast room and kitchen. A staircase was situated in the re-entrant angle between the two wings, but is now enclosed within later lean-to extensions.
The main facade has seven bays, with a central half-glazed door leading to the garden, set within a stone doorcase featuring a pediment and pilasters. The windows are 12-paned sashes, replaced in the 20th century, with near-flush boxes. They are set within brick surrounds and have gauged lintels. A plat band runs along the front, and wide, dentilled timber eaves are visible. Two hipped dormers break the roofline. The roof itself is hipped, with a stack to the gables at the rear of the end bays.
The interior retains panelling to the central saloon and to the right-end room on the south side. The latter room features a cornice and a moulded arched fireplace. The left-hand room retains late 17th-century oak panelling and a stone fire surround with eared details. A stair opening is present from the saloon, and features a panelled dado. The upper floors have not been inspected.
