Description

This 18th-century granary is located 68 meters south of Sunton House in Collingbourne Ducis. It is a freestanding, two-storey structure made of timber framing and weatherboarding, supported by twelve stone staddles, although one has been replaced with a brick support. The pitched roof is currently covered with corrugated metal sheets, likely replacing original slates.

The north gable end features an entrance with a vertical planked door and a ventilation window above it. To the east, there is a weatherboarded lean-to added in the early 20th century, which has large planked timber doors on the south side and a roof covered with corrugated metal sheets from the late 20th century. The south gable end is blind, while the west elevation includes a ventilation window at ground floor level.

Inside, the timber frame is mostly intact, including the timber posts from former partitions and the plank lining on the walls. The timber floor is still present, though it may have been replaced later.

Historically, this granary was part of Sunton Farm, a significant late 18th-century agricultural complex focused on grain processing and storage. The former farmhouse of Sunton Farm, now known as Sunton House, is located to the north of the granary. Sunton Farm is documented on the Collingbourne Kingston Tithe Map of 1844 and appears on later Ordnance Survey maps.

The granary is recognized for its rarity and completeness as a well-preserved example of a late 18th-century timber-framed and weatherboarded granary on stone staddles. It holds historical value as part of an important group of historic farm buildings at Sunton Farm, which includes Sunton House and the associated granary to its north.
