Description
West End Cottage is a 17th-century house with a gable facing the road, located on the south side of West End in Bishops Cannings. The house is timber-framed with colourwashed brick noggings and a thatched roof. It originally comprised three bays, with a lobby entry situated between the second and third bays, and a fourth bay added at the road end. The west elevation features an entrance to the half bay containing a stack and stair. Timber oriel windows have stone tiled roofs. Two dormers are on the east side, and two slightly canted moulded dormers, supported by brackets, are on the west side, with a small 17th-century ovolo moulded stair window above the door. The timber framing is three panels high, with straight corner braces. A brick bay, now painted with framing, was added to the left in the 19th century, featuring a small-paned window to the upper floor. The roof is half-hipped at both ends and has a central three-flue brick stack. A stone-tiled brick outbuilding was added to the south end. Inside, features include back-to-back chalkstone stacks, timber fire lintels, and chamfered spine beams. A framed wall between the right bay and the now kitchen was opened up.
