Description
The wall and gatepiers run south from the middle of the south front of Nos 20 and 21 to join the north side of No 22A. The wall is approximately 6 feet high and projects from between Nos 20 and 21 to a gatepier. A second similar gatepier stands opposite to the south. Both gatepiers are made of ashlar and feature moulded entablatures with low pyramidal tops and plain bases. Between the piers are double wrought-iron gates that incorporate a spear motif. The wall continues south, curving forward and increasing in height to approximately 10 feet. It is constructed of coursed rubble with ashlar quoins and plain coping. The wall extends down Coppice Hill and is an important part of the street, rising to 15 to 18 feet towards its south end. Directly opposite Nos 10, 11, and 12, there is a large elliptical carriage-arch with a keystone (which is blocked) set into the higher part of the wall. The wall is abutted at its south end by No 22A. Nos 9 to 12 (consecutive), Nos 14 to 16 (consecutive), Nos 19 to 23 (consecutive), the Wesleyan Methodist Church, the former Wesleyan Methodist Church, and the wall and gates form a group.
