Description

Burltons is a detached house located in Donhead St. Mary, built in the early 18th century and altered and extended in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The house is constructed of dressed limestone and features a tiled roof with coped verges and gable end brick stacks, forming an L-plan.

The south front is two stories high with three windows. To the left, there is a half-glazed door set in a chamfered stone case, while to the right are large French windows and a 19th-century two-light casement window. The first floor has a plat band and features two 19th-century two-light casements and one single casement. The attic includes two hipped dormers, each with 2-light casements.

On the left side, there is a two-story wing from the 18th century that projects forward, featuring two 2-light casements on both the ground and first floors. A 20th-century conservatory has replaced a 19th-century conservatory attached to the gable end, which has a 2-light casement and a single recessed chamfered casement on the first floor, along with a blocked bull's-eye window in the attic.

The right side of the main range has 2-light recessed chamfered mullioned casements on both the ground and first floors, along with a 2-light and a single casement in the attic. At the rear, there is a two-story range, possibly from the late 17th century, featuring sash windows and a late 19th-century two-story canted bay.

The interior is currently undergoing renovation and remodelling as of November 1985, but it retains some 18th-century fielded panelling in the room to the right of the entrance, an 18th-century open well staircase with turned and square-section balusters, and some mullioned windows that were retained from former external walls between the 18th and 19th-century ranges. Additionally, some fireplaces have been brought in from other locations during the current renovations.
