Description

Old Loves Farmhouse is an early to mid-18th century farmhouse situated without Melksham, near Bowerhill. The building is constructed of rubblestone with a stone slate half-hipped roof and brick stacks, arranged in an L-shaped plan with a gable end facing the street. It is two storeys high with a three-window front. The entrance door is set at a right angle to the street and features a chamfered door case and a flat stone hood supported by brackets. To the left of the door is a two-light cyma-mullioned window, and a blocked window is located to the right. The first floor has two two-light cyma-mullioned windows and one two-light beaded-mullioned window, all with leaded glass. Rear and right gable returns feature single, two, and three-light beaded and cyma-mullioned windows. A wing to the left has a chamfered door case to its left of a single-light cyma moulded window, with a blocked door situated to the right. The left return displays a pair of eight-pane sashes in a flat case with a mullion on the ground floor, and one four-pane sash on the first floor. The rear elevation has 20th-century casements on the ground floor, and two two-light cyma-mullioned windows and a 19th-century casement on the first floor. Internally, a room to the right of the entrance has narrow chamfered ceiling beams and a stone flat-arched fireplace with roll moulding. The difference in ceiling and floor levels between the two wings suggests the house was originally a single range with an additional wing built somewhat later.
