Description
Bowerhill Farmhouse is a circa early 18th-century farmhouse, extended in the 19th century. It is constructed from limestone rubble with dressed stone quoins and window frames. The roof is steeply pitched and covered in stone slates, with axial and side stacks featuring red brick shafts.
The original layout comprised a two-room front range with a central entrance passage leading to a large kitchen in a short service wing to the left. This service wing was later extended to the rear.
The north east front is symmetrical with three bays. It features large casement windows with horizontal glazing bars on both floors. A blocked 2-light window on the first floor retains its original cyma moulded stone frame. The central doorway has a chamfered stone frame and a circa late 19th-century glazed and panelled door. A gabled dormer window is located to the left of centre. The rear wing has a gabled end and consists of the original range with small windows in cyma moulded stone frames, and a later extension with casement windows. Stone and later glazed outshuts are present on the south east and north west sides respectively.
The large kitchen in the rear wing features chamfered cross-beams with run-out stops. The front rooms contain Victorian style chimneypieces. Other interior features include panelled doors and a winder staircase.
