Description

This is an early 19th century spa pump room, now a pair of attached houses known as The Grove, located on the east side of The Spa in Melksham Without. The building is constructed of ashlar, with a Welsh slate hipped roof and ashlar stacks. It is two storeys high, with a five-window front and smaller, single-windowed wings that project forward.

The front elevation features a centrally recessed three-window block. A ground floor verandah is positioned in front, with three segmental arches and French windows on either side of a blind window. A balustraded parapet runs along the first-floor balcony, above which are three French windows with margin lights. The side wings each feature a single French window to the ground floor, with a key pattern in the panel above. There is a six-pane sash window to the first floor of each wing. Deep eaves are supported by paired wooden brackets. The side returns contain three six-pane sashes to the first floor; the right return has blind windows flanking the door, while the left return has a square bay window to the right of the door and a lean-to extension to the left.

The porch to the left-hand entrance of No. 407 has five sides, constructed of timber and glass, with Art Nouveau stained glass. The right-hand entrance of No. 408 is housed within a late 19th century conservatory and features pilasters and a pediment.

The interior of No. 408 has been altered and contains no original door cases or fireplaces. The interior of No. 407 is reported to contain fireplaces with reeded surrounds and paterae, but has not been inspected. Originally, the central ground floor was a single large reception room, serving as the pump room of The Spa around 1815. The building was converted into two dwellings around 1901.
