Description

This is a pair of attached houses, built in the early 19th century as part of the Spa development in Melksham, and converted into two separate dwellings around 1950. The houses are constructed of ashlar stone, with a concrete tile hipped roof. They have a square plan, two storeys, and a basement, with three windows to the front.

The front facades have entrances to the left and right, accessed by seven stone steps. The central recessed bay contains a six-fielded-panelled door with a reeded door case and a rectangular light over, surrounded by reeded details and paterae. Number 409 has a large 12-pane sash window either side of the door, and three 12-pane sashes to the first floor. Number 410 has a plate glass sash to the left and a French window to the right of the door, with three 12-pane sashes to the first floor. A plat band runs continuously around all four facades at first floor level. The front has a central recessed bay with three tall semi-circular arches creating a verandah, one with a French window accessed by nine steps, a wrought iron balustrade to a stone balcony, and a French window with margin lights. To either side of the recess are plate glass sashes to the ground floor and 12-pane sashes to the first floor, all set within recessed panels with pilasters. Deep eaves are supported by paired wooden brackets. The rear facade mirrors the front without the verandah and balcony, and has a variety of sash windows.

The interior of Number 410 is said to retain reeded door cases and fireplace surrounds with paterae, dado rails and high skirting boards, though it was not inspected. Number 409 has been altered and lacks these features. A two-storey ashlar coach house is located to the rear of Number 409, with three windows, a plat band and a Welsh slate hipped roof.
