Description

This is a group of three attached shops and houses dating from the late 19th century. They are built of ashlar stone with Welsh slate gabled roofs and demonstrate an eccentric Victorian architectural style. The buildings have two storeys and four windows.

Number 23 features a round-arched doorway with a moulded case, imposts carved with classical faces to the keystone, and egg-and-dart ornament to the arch. A pediment sits above the doorway, supported by columns with Composite capitals. The shop front is from the 19th century and incorporates a cast iron column with a Composite capital. The first floor has a pair of round-arched windows with carved imposts, keystones of carved classical faces, and egg-and-dart ornament to the arches. The gabled roof has a coped verge and a finial with kneelers on carved classical heads.

Number 25 has a 19th-century shop front with large columns featuring Composite capitals on either side. The first floor features a canted bay with columns and Composite capitals, topped with a balustraded parapet.

Number 27 includes a square-headed cart entry to the left and a 19th-century shop front to the right. This shop front has square columns with Composite capitals to the sides and a cast-iron colonnette to the central entrance. A single round-arched window with similar detail to Number 23 is present, alongside a canted bay with the same detail as Number 25, but without the balustrade.

The interiors of the shops have been altered in the 20th century. The group represents a good example of eccentric Victorian-period shops, retaining their original frontages.
