Description
This is a late 18th and early 19th century house and former smithy, located on the east side of High Street, Burbage. The building is constructed of yellow brick, with a later extension in red brick, and has a thatched roof. It is two storeys high and raised above the road. The original central block consists of three bays, with a fourth bay added to the south, and a former smithy added to the north, now a shop. The main house features a central boarded entrance door and timber windows with leaded glazing. The upper floor of the original section is timber-framed, comprising two high horizontal panels. Similar windows are present on the extension and gable stack. The smithy is a single-storey structure, projecting forward and lower than the main house, with a window facing the road and brick dentilled eaves. The smithy’s gable is hipped, with a curved corner clad in weatherboards, containing a stable door. The roof of the smithy has a lean-to section covered in slate and corrugated asbestos along the rear of the house.
