Description

The Old Rectory is a detached house that dates from the 17th century, with early 19th-century alterations. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a tiled roof with brick or ashlar stacks. The building is laid out in an L-plan and has two storeys with a seven-window front.

The entrance is marked by a double-chamfered round-arched doorway located in the right of the two cross wings. The central part of the house has two recessed bays, each with 4-pane sash windows on both the ground and first floors. The left cross wing includes a two-storey canted bay with 4-pane sashes and a 3-light ovolo-mullioned window in the attic. Above the doorway, there is a stone oriel with a 3-light recessed chamfered mullioned window, and to the right, a 3-light mullioned window. The attic features a 3-light ovolo-mullioned window with a hoodmould, and the coped verges are topped with ball finials.

To the right of the main structure is a single-storey extension that has a 4-light leaded casement window. The right return of the building includes a reset 14th-century window in the single-storey extension on the left, a one-bay section with a 16-pane sash window, and a five-bay early 19th-century wing built in Flemish bond brick, which has 2-light leaded casements in the basement and 12-pane sashes on the principal floor. The rear of the house features 12-pane sashes in the early 19th-century wing with a hipped slate roof, several ovolo and chamfered mullioned windows on both floors of the west wing, and an early 19th-century stair extension with a round-arched sash. The east wing has a margin-pane sash window. The left return displays ovolo-mullioned windows on the ground, first, and attic floors. The interior was not accessible at the time of the survey in March 1985.
