Description

These two cottages, built as a row with a gable facing the street, date back to the 17th century. The original structure is timber-framed with colourwashed wattle and daub infill, reinforced with brick, and later extended in flint and cob, with some areas rendered. The roof is thatched. The cottages are one storey high with attics. The original three-bay section has framing reaching three panels in height and featuring corner braces; it was later extended by one bay at each end. The cottages have boarded doors with glazed panels and a variety of windows. There are four dormers on each side of the roof. A stack is located at the north-west gable of the original timber-framed section, and a later stack is at the end gable. The roof is half-hipped. Inside the original eastern two bays, a chamfered ceiling beam has step and scoop stops. A fire lintel in the rear cottage bears inscriptions reading “IMIG 1655” and “1615”.
