Description

Box Hedge Cottage is a cottage dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, situated on the east side of Idmiston High Street, Porton. The original timber-framed structure, with brick noggings, was extended in the 18th century using brick, and later raised in the 20th century to two storeys. An additional bay was added to the left, along with a C20 lean-to to the front. The framing is three panels high and includes corner braces. A C20 boarded door is located in the left bay, opposite a chimney stack. The windows are mostly 19th-century timber casements, with one leaded window and one window featuring a diamond pattern cast iron frame in the right extension. There are three flush dormers, and a half-round dormer in the left bay. The roof is steeply hipped to the right and thatched. Inside, the north-east bay contains a fireplace and oven, as well as an original staircase at the rear of the chimney stack. The right bay was originally open to the roof and unheated, with the stack being added later. The cottage is significant as an example of the development of the lobby entry plan.
