Description

End House West Gomeldon Farmhouse is a farmhouse that has been converted into two dwellings. It dates from the 17th and 18th centuries and is constructed of brick and flint with brick dressings, expanded in brick. The building features tiled roofs and stands two storeys high, with a cellar and attics.

The original structure is a two-bay block with a gable facing the road, built from brick and flint, and follows a lobby entry plan. It has chamfered and rebated stone mullioned windows, with brick relieving arches on the ground floor and timber leaded windows above. The roof is half hipped towards the road. An early to mid-18th century block was added at right angles to the rear bay, consisting of two bays in Flemish bond with a three-course plat band. This section has a timber doorcase with a pediment on shaped brackets in the left bay against the earlier build, featuring a panelled 17th century door with an overlight. The stone ovolo moulded windows have two lights, while the end bay on the upper floor has a single light.

A later 18th century addition is a wide single bay in header bond, which also includes two and three-light stone mullioned and leaded windows, with a roof that is half hipped to the right. A single storey service room with a slated roof was added in the 19th century to the rear gable of the first build.

Inside, the building was refitted in the early 18th century. The south-west room features a chamfered ceiling beam with run-out stops and a moulded cornice above fielded panelling. The hall has a fielded panelled dado and an 18th century staircase with three turned vase balusters on each tread, with the lowest flight reset. The kitchen in the second build has an open fireplace with chamfered stone jambs. There is panelling in the south-west bedroom and a panelled dado in the north-west bedroom. The roof of the first build consists of five bays, and some 17th century doors are present in the later build.
