Description

The Church of St Nicholas is an Anglican parish church built between 1876 and 1877 by architect J.L. Pearson. It is constructed from flint with brick dressings and features tiled roofs. The church consists of a nave, a chancel with a vestry at right angles, and a south porch. The nave has two-light Decorated style windows, while the chancel has a three-light window at the east end and a short three-light gable window for the vestry. There is a mid wall string that steps up under the east and west windows, and gable crosses adorn the structure. A bellcote with double openings and a crocketed gable is located over the west end of the nave, and the porch features an open trussed rafter roof with a boarded inner door.

Inside, the nave has three bays with tie beams and a facetted barrel vault. The walls are rendered, and there is a bowtell string at the base of the window embrasures. The chancel arch is wide, and the chancel itself has a panelled vault. Notable features include a piscina on the north wall, sedilia with nook shafts on the south, and an oak reredos. The church fittings include a 15th-century font that has been reset, featuring an octagonal bowl with trefoil-headed panels and varied fleurons below. The pulpit is made of oak and sits on a stone base, while the sanctuary rail consists of an oak pole on iron supports. Monuments within the church include a wall tablet from 1840 by Soper of Sarum and two 20th-century brasses. The west window glass dates from 1893, and there is a 17th-century armchair in the sanctuary.
