Description

Rose Cottage is a semi-detached house dating from the mid-18th century. It features a front made of limestone ashlar, a tiled roof, and brick stacks at the gable ends. The entrance is positioned at right angles to the road. The house is two stories high with an attic and has a two-windowed front facing the street. There are two 12-pane sash windows in moulded stone architraves on both the ground and first floors, along with a well-crafted moulded stone eaves cornice and chamfered rusticated quoins.

On the right side, there is a 20th-century two-storey porch with a modern door, and an early 20th-century flat-roofed extension attached to a late 18th-century rear wing built in English bond, which has sash windows, raised eaves, and a gabled dormer. Inside, the house features an unusual dog leg staircase with carved flat wooden balusters that mimic wrought iron, a moulded ramped handrail, and Tuscan newels. The drawing room at the front has a round-arched doorway with a keystone and imposts, a six-panelled door, and a classical wooden fireplace with a semi-circular headed niche and shaped shelves to the right.

At the rear, there is a former stable with 20th-century doors, one 18th-century fixed window with round-arched lights, a hipped dormer on the left with a two-light casement, and a planked loft door to the right with a hip. Rose Cottage is part of a group of houses that were rebuilt shortly after the fire of 1754.
