Description
The Dust Hole, also known as The King's Arms Public House, is a 17th or early 18th century building located on Castle Street. It is two storeys high and has a stuccoed exterior that is grooved to mimic ashlar stone. The building features a stone plinth, rustic quoins on the ground floor, draughted piers above, and a moulded eaves cornice beneath a Welsh slate roof that is a quarter hipped to the right, with a central brick chimney.
On the first floor, there are three windows with architraves; the center window is blocked, while the others are fitted with glazing bar sashes. The central doorway has an architrave and a six-panel door, flanked by modern two-light single-hung sash windows, also with architraves. The rear of the building is constructed from rubble and includes two glazing bar sash windows with dressed stone surrounds, as well as a central blocked two-light ovolo mullioned window.
At the rear, there is a gabled two-storey brick wing covered with double Roman tiles and featuring two brick chimneys, one of which has a gable and is partly stepped. The south side of this wing has two windows with reeded inner edges, while the north side has a three-light raking top dormer and two first-floor four-light weaver's windows.
The interior has undergone significant alterations, but the attic remains noteworthy due to two bastard cruck trusses supporting the main collars and diamond-scratched mid-19th century graffiti found on the panes of the window in the extension. The building is part of a group that includes Nos 1 to 6, including 5A.
