Description

Horningsham War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It is situated within an enclosed area of hard-standing on a grassed bank near the junction of Water Lane and Church Street. Nearby, to the north-east, is the Grade II-listed Spring Head.

The memorial features a Portland stone wheel-head cross adorned with carved flower and foliate decoration in relief on the three arms and the center of the cross, visible on both the rear (north-west) and front (south-east) faces. The segments of the wheel on the front face display the words "THE GIFT OF GOD IS ETERNAL LIFE" carved in relief. The cross has a tapering shaft that ends in a moulded foot and rises from a four-sided plinth with a moulded cap and a narrow, square foot. This is set atop a two-stepped octagonal base.

The plinth features the main inscription and the names of the fallen in incised lettering. The front face reads, "IN LASTING AND GLORIOUS MEMORY OF THESE WHO FELL IN THE WAR 1914–1918," while the names of the 24 men who died are inscribed on the remaining three faces of the plinth. Additionally, a rectangular stone tablet is set flat on the upper step of the base beneath the main inscription, which bears the inscription "1939-1945 (NAMES)" in incised lettering.

The memorial is enclosed within a small area of paving surrounded by a low wall made of coursed stone, with rounded, flat stone coping along the east, west, and north boundaries. The southern boundary consists of a continuation of the boundary wall that runs parallel to the road and includes the entrance gate to the enclosure.
