Description

Nos 81 and 82 on The Island are mid-18th century wool drying house and attached workshop and cottage, now functioning as two semi-detached cottages. No 81 features painted rubble stone with a tiled hipped roof and a brick stack on the right, while No 82 is constructed of rubble stone with a tiled roof. No 81 is two storeys high with two windows; it has casements and a 4-panelled door to the left of center, with two 2-light casements on either side and two more on the first floor. The left side of No 81 has a 2-light casement on the first floor. A single-storey outhouse connects No 81 with No 82, featuring a planked door and two 2-light casements, along with a tall brick stack. No 81 was originally an octagonal drying house, with a gabled porch and a planked door, a tiled offset to the first floor, and a 1-light casement above the door, decorated with bottle ends. The left side has blocked openings on both the ground and first floors, with a 19th-century stack now on this wall. The rear of the building has 2-light casements. The interiors are not accessible but were altered in the 20th century. These buildings are the last remnants of a former woollen industry in Horningsham, which once included a larger mill and factory complex owned by the Everett family during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
