Description

Nos 76 and 78 on The Island are two semi-detached houses built in the mid-18th century. They are constructed from coursed rubble stone and feature chamfered rusticated quoins, a tiled hipped roof, and brick stacks at the rear. The houses are arranged in an 'L' plan, with No 76 facing the main front.

The buildings are two stories tall and have three windows, all fitted with sash windows. The central entrance features a six-panelled door set within a beaded architrave, topped by a pediment supported by consoles. On either side of the door are 12-pane sash windows, also in beaded architraves, and there is a plat band at sill level. The first floor has three additional sashes in beaded architraves. In the attic, there are two hipped dormers with 2-light casements.

On the right and left returns, there is one sash window in beaded architraves on both the ground and first floors, along with a plat band. The rear wing includes a gabled porch for No 76, two 2-light casements, and one 2-light chamfered mullioned casement on the ground floor, while the first floor has two chamfered mullioned casements and one 2-light casement, along with a gabled attic dormer. The rear of the wing features 20th-century casements and 2-light mullioned casements. The main range has an external brick stack and a lean-to brick extension.

Inside, the houses contain six-panelled doors and a central staircase with boarded-over balusters. These houses were likely the residence of the mill owner of the nearby woollen mill and factory, which operated until the mid-19th century.
