Description
Dove Holes War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1927, with later additions for the Second World War. It is situated in a raised garden on an area of irregular paving on the west side of Hallsteads (A6).
The memorial features a stone wheel-head cross with cusped tracery in each segment, which sits atop an octagonal shaft with a square collar and moulded foot. The shaft rises from an octagonal chamfered plinth that has a narrow, octagonal chamfered foot. This entire structure is placed on a two-stepped base.
On the east face of the plinth, there is an inscription that reads, "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE FROM THIS VILLAGE WHO SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR." The other faces of the plinth list the 36 names of those who died in the First World War, with the exception of the north and north-west faces, which are blank. The south-east face includes the six names related to the Second World War. The east face of the plinth foot shows the dates 1914 – 1918, while the south-east face displays the dates 1939 – 1945.
The memorial is set within a raised site that features a regular-coursed stone retaining wall with flat copings on the east side. This wall has a central set of steps leading up to the memorial and ends with small rectangular piers with flat stone caps on either side of the steps. Behind the memorial, there is a curved section of hedging, along with a low stone wall. Metal railings, added later, are attached to the copings of the retaining wall, and metal handrails are affixed to the wall on either side of the steps.
