Description

Townend Methodist Church is a church built around 1874, constructed from rock-faced, coursed, squared gritstone with gritstone dressings and quoins, topped with a slate roof and moulded stone copings. The church features a gabled nave with a spired tower at the north-west corner, transepts, and offices to the south. The early 20th-century north porch has a central pointed doorcase with a dripmould above, flanked by single light cusped headed windows. Behind the porch is the original north window, which has a pointed head and geometric bar tracery, with pilasters on either side. Above this, in the gable, is a cusped, circular, blind opening.

The square tower to the west has an octagonal spire, with cusped stonework at the top of the square tower followed by a tiled section. The base of the octagonal spire features a band of quartefoils in circles, and there are pointed, cusped headed bell openings on all sides. The overhanging stone spire has toothmark decoration. On the east elevation, there is a cusped lancet window to the north and three stepped buttresses to the south that reach almost to the eaves level. Each buttress has a two-light geometric bar tracery window. The transepts have diagonal buttresses and a central window similar to those in the nave, with cusped lancets on either side and a rose window above.

Inside, there is a northern gallery with cusped panels supported by cast iron columns, contemporary wooden pews, and all windows feature plate tracery. The church contains a significant amount of contemporary stained glass, along with a 20th-century pulpit and altar.
