Description
Matrons' College Farmhouse is an 18th-century farmhouse located on Castle Lane in Whaddon. It is constructed of English bond brick with stone and flint bands, topped with a tiled roof featuring brick stacks. The building has a T-plan layout with an 18th-century extension and stands two stories tall with an attic, featuring a two-window design.
The entrance door is situated on the left side of the projecting wing of the T, consisting of a six-panelled door set in a moulded case with a cornice. To the right of the door is a 16-pane sash window, and above it on the first floor is a 12-pane sash window. The gable end of the wing includes a central projecting stack with narrow casements on either side across three floors. The main range has 20th-century casements on the ground floor to the left and right of the wing, with a 19th-century casement on the first floor to the right. The left return features one 16-pane sash window on both floors. At the rear, there is a rendered wing from the late 18th century, which includes a planked door and cast-iron casements.
Inside, the farmhouse boasts an 18th-century newel staircase and stop-chamfered beams with ogee stops on the ground floor. There is also a cellar located beneath the parlour. The farmhouse is likely a late 18th-century rebuild of an earlier structure, which was endowed by Matrons' College, The Close, Salisbury, founded in 1682 by Seth Ward.
