Description
Wilton Windmill is a Grade II* tower mill built in 1821, likely by or for J. Gale. It was restored between 1971 and 1976. The windmill features header bond brickwork and a rivetted sheet aluminium hemispherical cap. It stands five storeys tall and has a braced timber gallery that replaced the original roundhouse during the restoration. The ground floor includes opposed doors and timber round-headed windows throughout. The windmill is equipped with two common sails and two patent sails, the latter having 21 shades and leading boards. It has an iron spider and a six-blade fantail with an external worm and cograck. The striking gear and chain set are located below the fantail frame.
Inside, there is an iron vertical shaft, a brake wheel, and a spur wheel, with the brake wheel featuring hardwood cogs. It also has a band brake and two pairs of underdriven stones, one pair of French burrs, and one pair of greys. There is a separate bevel gear drive for the sack hoist and a lay shaft for the wire machine on the first floor. The windmill includes manual stone lifting gear. All sails and machinery have been restored and are in working order, making it the only complete windmill in Wiltshire and possibly located on the site of an earlier post mill.
