Description

This building at 50 and 50A High Street dates to 1761, as indicated by the date inscribed on a pair of rainwater pipes with decorative cast lead heads. It is a two-story building with an attic, and a basement. The exterior is vitreous brick with red quoins and window surrounds. A moulded wooden eaves cornice sits upon a brick corbel table, and the roof is a Mansard style covered in old tiles, with flanking chimneys. A slight projection marks the central bay, which has three gabled dormers.

The front facade has five windows on the first floor and three on the ground floor. A central six-panel door is recessed within a panelled reveal, and is framed by a wooden doorcase featuring three-quarter fluted Doric columns, a broken moulded entablature, and a pediment. A segmented arched stable door is located to the right. There are three basement windows. An early 18th century wrought iron railing with urn standards runs along the front.

An early 19th century brick extension is situated on the right-hand side, featuring a three-story angular bay window and a hipped roof covered in old tiles.

The building is part of a group which includes numbers 42 to 50, 50A, 51 to 64, St Peter and St Paul's Church, numbers 65 to 85, The Sun Public House, and numbers 88 to 90. Group value is assigned due to their collective historical and architectural significance.
