Description
The Public Library is a mid-19th century building constructed of stock brick with pitched concrete tile roofs. It is a single storey with attics and features a two-gabled front, with a smaller gable set slightly back between the two principal gables. The gables are coped and adorned with ornamental finials, supported on kneelers. Each principal gable has one mullioned window with square heads and hood moulds. The attics contain one coulus each, with outlines formed by the intersection of a trilobe and a triangle, set within "spherical triangles" under hood moulds that have label stops carved as medieval heads. The central bay features a doorway with a 4-centred arch and a modern door, two stringcourses, a single light with a hood mould, and a blind oculus consisting of a quadrilobe set within a square, topped by a shaped gable.
The Public Library, along with Nos 65 to 85 (consecutive), The Sun Public House, and Nos 88 to 90 (consecutive), forms a group with the Church of St Peter and St Paul, as well as Nos 42 to 64 (consecutive) on the south side.
