Description

A pair of houses located on Cross Hayes Lane, dating from the 17th century and altered in the 19th century. The houses are constructed of rendered limestone rubble with a central brick ridge stack and a stone slate roof. They have a two-room plan with a lobby entrance and a rear extension. Each house is two storeys and an attic, with a single-window range. Number 2 has a six-panel door, three-light mullion windows, and a gabled dormer with a horned three/three-pane sash. Number 4 has a half-glazed door, a two-light ground-floor casement, and a two/two-pane first-floor sash.

The interior of Number 4 includes a single-bay collar truss roof with yoked ridge and tenoned purlins. There are two ground-floor axial beams with three-inch chamfers, a winder stair to the rear of a large, deep, and covered-over fireplace, and a first-floor scratch-moulded six-panel 17th-century door with strap hinges at the top. Number 2 was not inspected but is reported to have a blocked Tudor window in the party wall, and chamfered ceiling beams. Historically, until around 1800, the buildings served as the Shoe Public House.
