Description
Orchard Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, with its gable end facing the road. It is constructed from sarsen stone, featuring a brick facade and extensions, as well as a brick gable, topped with a thatched roof. Originally a single-storey building, it has been altered to include part single-storey and attic space, and part two storeys. The house consists of three and a half bays, with a central kitchen wing at the rear.
Inside, there is a central living hall that includes an inserted stack and a cross passage leading to the rear. The inner room is located in the left bay and features a dog-leg stair, while below the cross passage is a dairy, which may have originally served as a byre. Access to the cross passage is provided by a door within a 20th-century open trellis porch. The inner parlour has a square bay and paned casement windows. The left end of the farmhouse was raised to two storeys, likely during the 18th century.
The interior showcases spine beams in the hall that have ogee and bar stops, supported by a carved timber corbel in a framed screen at the upper end. There is an early to mid-16th century fire hood, and the stair in the parlour dates from the 18th century. Smoke blackening can be observed in the roof. Historical deeds related to the property date back to an estate from 1543-1544.
