Description
Showell Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around 1820, with a late 17th-century attached wing. The main part of the building is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and features a low-pitched slate roof, coped gables, and end stacks. The front is formal, two stories high with three windows, and includes an ashlar plinth, flush quoins, a moulded cornice, a parapet, and flush window surrounds. The outer windows have twenty panes, while the first-floor center window has twelve panes above an ashlar doorcase. This doorcase features a broad elliptical-arched surround with a keystone and frames a full-width fanlight above a six-panel door with sidelights.
The attached wing is two stories tall and made of rubble stone, also with a slate roof. On the left side, there is a cyma-moulded two-light recessed mullion-and-transom window with a hoodmould and a two-light window above it. The central door has a chamfered surround with rounded shoulders. To the right, there is a double-fronted stable section with two two-light beaded mullion windows typical of the 18th century, and a central door on each floor. The upper floor features dove openings.
Across the forecourt stands an early 18th-century screen wall, originally with iron railings, now featuring ashlar block walls between piers that lead to two gateways. The rusticated piers have gate stops, cornices, and urn finials, with early 19th-century iron gates. The rear wall of the wing has a chimney gable and a four-light mullion-and-transom window to the right.
