Description

Rodwell Hall is a large, irregular mansion dating from the mid-19th century, originally built for Mr Hayward. The design incorporates elements of Gothic Renaissance and early 19th-century architecture. The house is two storeys and has an attic, constructed from coursed and dressed stone with tiled roofs featuring fishscale bands. External features include numerous gables, gargoyles, and occasional pinnacles.

The south front has a central shaped gable bearing the monogram "CH" with a lion above. A projecting gabled break is to the right. To the left is a lower, two-storey Gothic pavilion, also projecting and featuring a belfry; it has two paired lancet windows on the first floor and a corbelled chimney. A two-storey bay is set back to the west. A large, two-storey canted bay extends to the right, with a facade of one, four, and one windows, featuring a four-centred arch with moulded heads and a decorated parapet.

The north front is characterised by five gables at varying levels of projection, and a polygonal French Renaissance-style staircase tower with cusped windows, an openwork parapet, and a small steeple. A porte cochere, added slightly later in 1878, is of Gothic design with a foiled open parapet, pinnacles, and a shield in the gable; the interior has rib vaulting.

The interior includes a low, pointed arch with dog-tooth moulding in the hall, and Italianate door pieces. A fine ceiling is present in the drawing room, with stiff leaf corbels to the arches on the side walls. The dining room features a pendant ceiling. Hand-painted tiles depicting nymphs and other figures are found in the lobby leading to the porte cochere. The building is now divided into three separate houses.
