Description
Fieldways Highfield is a building dating from around 1858, with later additions. It is two storeys tall and constructed from Bath stone on a coursed stone plinth, which continues as a terrace from the projecting porch to the south and east corners. The main façade, facing southeast, features a three-bay design with a central pavilion that has a decorative dormer gable and rounded corner to the east. The ground floor includes Venetian tracery and windows with mullions and transoms, adorned with stained glass.
The southwest front also has a three-bay layout, featuring a large conservatory and a wide two-storey canted bay with a pavilion roof. The windows are subdivided, with Venetian tracery on the ground floor. The northeast front presents an asymmetrical arrangement, including a hipped-roof canted bay, a bay with a turretted bow, and a linking block that leads to a projecting pavilion from 1903, which has coupled windows and terminates in a turret topped with a pepperpot ogee dome. The roofs are decorated with tile work.
The building is notable for its conservatory, which has an aisled design with a triple barrelled roof and cast iron cresting, supported by a delicate cast iron arcade. Inside, it contains a grotto made of vermiculated stone. Additionally, various stable buildings from 1892 located at the rear are included in this listing.
