Description
Gardener's Cottage is located east-southeast of Frankleigh House and dates from the later 19th century, possibly designed by Henry Clutton. The cottage is constructed from coursed stone rubble with freestone dressings and features a gabled and hipped roof covered in stone tiles, complete with deep eaves. It has ashlar axial and gable-end stacks that have moulded cornices. The plan is T-shaped, with a rear wing at the center.
The exterior is one storey with an attic and has an asymmetrical design. The west front has three windows, including a cambered arch doorway to the right of center and two-light stone mullion windows with hoodmoulds. There is a similar window in the central gable above the eaves. The right-hand (south) return features a similar gable above a canted stone bay window, and there is a stone porch to the right at the angle with the rear wing. It appears that the gable-ended rear wing has been raised. The interior has not been inspected. This cottage serves as the gardener's residence for Frankleigh House and was remodelled in 1848 by Henry Clutton.
