Description

Frankleigh House is a large house situated within its own grounds. The core of the house dates back to around 1685, although the south and east frontages were rebuilt in about the 1840s. The house has undergone considerable rebuilding and restoration, but retains original features, including some chimneys. The main elevation is ashlar and features stone-tiled, high-pitched roofs, with four gables. A gabled projecting wing on the left has a two-storey square bay with four-light casement windows, featuring stone mullions and single transoms. The remainder of the facade is divided into three sections, with a central square porch with a room above, and angular bays rising through two storeys on either side. The window above the door is a four-light casement with stone mullions and a single transom, while the bay windows have three lights, with a single light in each angle. These bays are topped by a moulded cornice and an embattled parapet. The central doorway has a flattened pointed arch within a rectangular dripmould, with carved spandrels and a moulded head and jambs. A continuous weathered string runs at first floor level. All gables have pointed finials, and attic windows are two-light casements with stone mullions and flat dripmoulds. The house has tall, square, ashlar chimney stacks with embattled caps, set diagonally in groups of three. Carved stone eagles are positioned at the corners of the roof, and gargoyles run along the cornice. A symmetrical forecourt features a strap-work parapet with pointed finials on the dividing piers. Steps lead down to a grass terrace with a low surrounding wall, having moulded coping and ball caps at intervals.
