Description

Lime Kiln Studios is a house built around 1690 for Dr. Harding. It features diaper brick construction with stone quoins, window dressings, and a stone plinth. The building has a stone slate roof and dormers, and it is two stories high with an attic and cellar. The layout is L-shaped, with the entrance located in the re-entrant angle leading to the original stair hall. There is a late 18th-century rubble stone extension to one wing. The entrance includes a six-panelled door set within a stone architrave, accessed by two steps, and features a flat canopy supported by consoles. A moulded stone string course runs along the building, and the windows are 12-pane sashes with simple stone architraves, gauged brick arches, and stone keys. The eaves are hollow moulded. Inside, the layout has been altered, but there is a notable staircase with three stories and two turned balusters on each tread. There is also a panelling partition by the stair, stone moulded fireplaces, and some room panelling. Additionally, there are good later 20th-century extensions that serve as a lobby to the studios.
