Description
Stafford House is a house dating from the mid to late 17th century, set back from the street. It is constructed of pebbledashed stone rubble with squared stone quoins and window dressings. The roof is hipped and sprocketed, covered with slate, and features three flat-roofed dormers, with gables at the rear. The house has two storeys, an attic, and a cellar, following a double pile plan with a one-bay hipped central rear extension. The original stacks have been removed.
The front elevation is symmetrical with five bays, featuring a central six-panel door that is accessed by three steps and set within a moulded doorcase. The doorcase is topped with a pediment supported by acanthus consoles. The ground floor has 19th-century eight-pane sash windows, while the upper floor has margin-glazed sashes. The eaves are wide and moulded.
Inside, there is a central stair hall with a notable staircase that has two turned balusters on each tread and a heavy handrail. The first floor features three two-panelled bolection moulded doors. The building is reputed to be associated with the wool trade.
