Description
Scammells Bridge is a bridge over the River Avon, built in 1858 and re-erected on its current site in 1898. It features a single span supported by four cast-iron segmental arched girders, which were cast in 1857 by Joseph Butler and Co at the Stanningly Ironworks near Leeds. Above the girders are wrought-iron lattice parapets, and the bridge is anchored by concrete terminal piers with moulded caps, which were added in 1898. Originally, the bridge was constructed to carry the London to Exeter railway over Castle Street nearby. After being replaced in 1898, it was moved to its present location to carry the A3393 over the River Avon. The parapets bear inscriptions indicating that T. Scammell moved and re-erected the bridge without the use of machinery.
