Description
Stowell Park House is a house set in parkland, built in 1813 for Admiral Montague. It is constructed of ashlar limestone with a slate roof and features two storeys and attics. The house has a five by three bay layout, with the entrance elevation displaying five bays. The central two bays contain a bead-moulded door with a radially glazed segmental fanlight in one bay and a window in the other, all beneath a cornice. The windows are twelve-paned sashes, some of which are blind, featuring slender glazing bars and concealed boxes, with floating cornices above the ground floor windows. The eaves are made of wood and adorned with paired modillions. The central three bays are raised above the cornice level to form the attic, which is capped with three stacks. There are two low relief panels depicting a bull and the initials SR, as well as goats with the initials JR.
On the garden elevation, there is an open ground floor verandah supported by six Roman Doric columns. The central ground floor bay is blind, flanked by tripartite 15-pane sashes that extend to full height. The upper floor features twelve-paned sashes with false shutters. At the rear, there is a two-storey gabled block and a service wing consisting of four bays with 16 and 20-paned sashes and two raking dormers. Inside, the house boasts good moulded cornices, panelled doors and shutters, marble fireplaces, and a stone flagged hall floor.
