Description
Winterbourne War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with additions for the Second World War. It is situated in the south-west corner of the churchyard of the Church of St Michael and All Angels, which is also a Grade II-listed building.
The memorial features a granite cross pattée set above a moulded collar on a tall, tapering shaft that has chamfered edges and stops. This shaft rises from a tapering, four-sided plinth that sits on an octagonal base.
On the western face of the plinth, the main inscription and the names of 21 servicemen who died in the First World War are incised. The inscription reads, "FROM THE 3 WINTERBOURNES/ WHO DIED IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ 'THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE.'" Additionally, a wedge-shaped stone tablet is placed against the base of the memorial on its western side, which bears an inscription in leaded lettering that reads "1939 – 1945/ (6 NAMES)."
