Description

The Elms is a house built around 1730, constructed of vitrified blue brick with red brick dressings and a slated roof. It has two storeys and an attic, featuring three bays. The central entrance has a six-panelled door set within a fluted doorcase, topped by a flat panelled canopy supported by shaped brackets. On either side of the entrance are late 18th to early 19th century canted bays with flat roofs and 12-paned sash windows. The upper floor contains five 12-paned sashes, with the central window showcasing rubbed brick jambs and a rounded head, complete with key and springing blocks. The flanking windows have heavy glazing bars and gauged brick lintels, also adorned with stone key blocks and sills. The building is accentuated by full-height pilasters at each end, featuring moulded brick capitals, and wide eaves supported by paired modillions. There are three dormers, with the central one having a segmental pediment. Large external gable stacks rise from the roof, with the upper section panelled and featuring arched recesses. At the rear, there is a parallel range from the early 19th century, which was extended to the south in the late 19th century, and includes a central rear door and large paned windows. Inside, the drawing room to the right of the hall has been altered and features panelling.
