Description
Witherington Farmhouse and the attached cottage is a farmhouse dating from around 1700. It is built of Flemish bond brick, with an 18th-century addition in English bond, and features tiled roofs and brick stacks. The late 18th-century cottage at the rear is also constructed of Flemish bond brick. The building is L-shaped and has two storeys with a five-window front. The central entrance consists of a six-panelled door with a segmental head and keystone, leading to a gabled porch. To the right of the door are two three-light casements and one single casement, while to the left are two 12-pane sash windows and one single casement. The first floor has a two-brick plat band and five two-light leaded casements, with two hipped dormers on the roof and saddleback coped verges.
To the right is an 18th-century bay with one three-light casement, and there is a windowless right return and rear featuring casements. The left return has a 12-pane sash window on both the ground and first floors. The rear of the main range includes casements and a tile-hung gabled extension. The rear cottage features a planked door in a porch on the north front and segmental-headed casements on the ground floor, with four 19th-century two-light casements on the first floor. Attached to the right of the cottage front is a one-bay workshop built in English bond with vitrified headers, a planked door, and casements, along with a rear outshut to the cottage.
Inside, there is a pine fireplace with Ionic pilasters at the south end, chamfered beams, and a fireplace lintel at the north end, as well as a panelled dado and some reset partition panelling. The stairs feature reused turned balusters, and the attic has planked doors with strap hinges. This house was mentioned in the 1648 Parliamentary Survey as a three-bay timber-framed house before it was rebuilt in brick around 1700.
