Description
Waterways is a detached cottage dating back to around 1600, with an 18th-century addition. It is timber-framed, with English bond brickwork to the south wall and west bay, and has a thatched roof with gable-end brick stacks. The cottage faces the road with two original bays from around 1600, and a third bay was added to the west. It is a single-storey building with an attic, and originally had two windows. A 20th-century door is on the south side, alongside two two-light and one three-light metal casement windows. Two eyebrow dormers with two-light casements are also present. The left return shows a gable end to the road with a 20th-century external stack and a casement window. The rear of the cottage retains square-panelled timber framing and 20th-century metal casement windows. A late 19th-century single-storey extension with a half-hipped tiled roof is located at the east end. Inside, there are chamfered beams with fine vase-shaped stops, supported on chamfered wall posts, along with chamfered joists in the east room. An open fireplace features a chamfered lintel with concave stops, and there are 18th-century planked doors. The roof, dating back to around 1600, has a tie-beam braced to jowled main posts, queen struts to the collar, and clasped purlins with wind bracing. The cottage continues to be occupied by the water keeper for the Longford Estate.
