Description
The Great Bedwyn War Memorial commemorates the First World War, dating from around 1920, and was later extended after 1945 to include the names of those who fell in the Second World War. The memorial is constructed from stone and takes the form of an ornate carved cross set atop a tall, tapering shaft. The shaft features a carved stone with a serpent entwined around it, and stands upon a hexagonal plinth with carved decoration and the inscription "THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918". Behind the cross is a three-sided wall with moulded cappings and piers at each end. The central panel of the wall is inscribed with a commemorative verse, and the flanking panels list the names of those who died. The memorial stands on a stepped base, and a stone has been added to the front to record the years 1939 and 1945 alongside the names of the Second World War casualties.
