Description
The school, built in 1835 and patronized by the Marquess of Ailesbury, is a single-storey structure made of ashlar limestone with a tiled roof. It features two classrooms arranged end to end, with a central porch that has inner doors leading to each room. There is a later infants block attached to the rear. The steeply gabled porch projects forward and has a studded timber door set under a Tudor arch, with fanlights in the spandrils. Above the porch, the Ailesbury Arms are depicted in relief within a crowned garter and scroll. On either side of the porch, there are two 2-light windows with chamfered surrounds and label moulds, as well as similar but taller windows in the gables. Internally, there is a painted map from 1841 on the rear wall that shows the two world hemispheres, with British possessions outlined in red; however, it is in poor condition and was covered over at the time of the survey in February 1985.
