Description

The Fosbury and Oxenwood War Memorial is a First World War memorial that includes additions for the Second World War. It is situated to the north of the road connecting Fosbury and Oxenwood, within a grassed area, and is located to the west of the Grade II*-listed Christ Church and the Grade II-listed Buchan House, which was the former vicarage.

Constructed from Cornish granite, the memorial features a Celtic wheel-head cross with a tapering shaft. An interlaced knot work design is carved in relief on the south-west face of the cross-head and part of the shaft. The cross rises from a tapering, four-sided plinth that has a rectangular base. The inscriptions and names are presented in leaded lettering.

The primary inscription is located on the south-west face of the plinth and reads: "THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918/ TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND/ IN EVER GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE LOYAL SONS OF/ FOSBURY AND OXENWOOD/ WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES FOR KING, COUNTRY AND LIBERTY/ 'THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE'/" followed by 15 names, which include their regiment and date of death.

Additionally, a rectangular granite tablet is positioned against the south-west face of the plinth foot, with a second inscription on its upper surface that reads: "1939-1945/ (NAME)/ ROYAL OAK/ 14TH OCTOBER 1939."
