Description
Filby War Memorial is a First World War memorial with additions for the Second World War, located in the churchyard of the Church of All Saints, which is a Grade II*-listed building. The memorial is positioned to the left upon entering the churchyard.
It features a polished granite wheel-head cross on a tapering plinth with a moulded cap, resting on a single-stepped stone base. The plinth displays inscriptions and names in incised lettering that is painted black.
The principal inscription on the north face of the plinth reads: "THIS CROSS IS ERECTED/ IN MEMORY OF THE MEN/ FROM THIS PARISH WHO LAID/ DOWN THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR/ COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919/ THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." The names of 13 individuals are listed on the east and west faces of the plinth.
The south face of the memorial includes the Second World War inscription: "1939 - 1945/ IN HONOURED MEMORY" followed by three names.
The memorial is enclosed by a low wooden fence, which is noted as not being of special or historic interest.
