Description

Christ Church is an Anglican parish church located in Tidcombe and Fosbury, built between 1854 and 1856 by architect S.S. Teulon. The church is constructed of flint with Bath stone dressings and features a tiled roof. It consists of a nave and chancel in a single vessel, with a southwest porch that includes a steeple and a north chancel vestry. The church has six bays, with an entrance under the tower that is adorned with an ogee hood featuring vine leaf crockets, double nook shafts, and naturalistic foliage capitals. The tower has gabled buttresses, and the windows are two-light with varied Decorated tracery and relieving arches made of alternating tile and glazed brick. The chancel also has gabled buttresses, with a five-light east window and a four-light west window, and an ashlar panel below the east end. The tower is three stages high, with a bell stage that has pierced transenna and a tall machicolated parapet with carved panels. An octagonal stair tower is set in the re-entrant against the nave and rises to a spirelet topped with a crown.

Inside, the church features a six-bay open timber roof, with trusses bracketed to wall corbels in the nave and hammer beams on two trusses of the chancel, which also have scalloped windbraces. The chancel is raised by two steps, and there are inscriptions over the windows, which are fitted with grisaille glass. The church contains several oak fittings, including an octagonal stone font with a small bowl, a pulpit, a reading desk, choir stalls, pews, and a communion rail. The altar has been removed. The church is currently redundant.
