Description
The Church of St Giles is an Anglican parish church designed by S S Tevlon and built between 1857 and 1858. It is constructed of squared and coursed limestone with a stone slate roof. The church features a nave, chancel, and a south aisle that connects to a two-storey vestry and organ chamber, along with a south porch and a tower located centrally on the north side of the nave. The architectural style is primarily 14th century decorated, characterized by mostly two or three-light windows, including a broad mullioned two-light window in the vestry that has 'Kentish' octofoil tracery beneath a low-set transom.
The three-stage tower includes a decorated triple-light bell stage with pierced stone screens, a pierced parapet, and a pinnacle on the north-west stair turret. Inside, the church has a six-bay nave supported by round piers on high bases, featuring a collar king-post roof that is wind braced. The east window has five lights, while the west window has four lights. The interior includes contemporary pews, a pulpit, a reading desk, and a reredos from 1878. There are three windows in the chancel and two in the nave designed by Wailes, along with original plain glass windows with Tevlon leading. The outer porch features good gates made in 1978, and there is a Norman octagonal font bowl.
