Description

No. 5 The Green is a large detached dwelling built in the early 18th century. It features squared, dressed, and coursed limestone, with a moulded eaves cornice and a hipped stone slate roof on the main wing, along with a gabled back wing. The building has stone stacks with moulded caps on the west gable and the ridge of the rear extension, which is located to the left of the entry.

The structure has a T-plan, with a fine symmetrical block on the left facing the garden, and a long wing at the back that is not bonded to earlier work, with the principal entry from the street. The garden front is two storeys and has an attic, featuring five windows with modern casements set in stone architraves. There are three small gabled dormers with 2-light casements, and centrally located modern glazed doors framed by unfluted Corinthianesque pilasters and a broken baroque pediment. The front is framed in pilasters with V-joints, and the cornice is broken forward over the caps.

The return gable facing the road is similar, with two windows and a moulded string course, along with pilaster framing. The rear wing is three storeys high with four windows, all featuring 2-light casements in flat band surrounds with keystones at the ground floor, and flush keys at the first floor to a continuous cill band. There is a six-panel fielded door in a 19th-century porch with corner pilasters, and inscribed over the door is the phrase: "God's Providence is my Inheritance."

Inside, there is an open well stair with turned balusters and a swept handrail, along with early 18th-century stone fire surrounds that have eaved and moulded surrounds in two ground floor rooms. The interior also retains many 18th-century shutters and doors.
