Description

The Church of St James is a church built around 1858-1860 by S.S. Teulon. It is constructed from knapped flint with brick dressings and bands, Bath stone cills, tracery, and some stone quoins, topped with tiled roofs. The church features a nave, a south aisle, a south porch, a chancel, a rudimentary tower, and transepts at the crossing, along with a north vestry.

On the south elevation, there is a bellcote on the gable to the left, a gabled porch with open sides over a door that has a two-centred arch with a drip mould and carved heads at the springers to the left. The aisle contains three two-light windows in plain two-centred arches at the center, while the transept appears as a gabled dormer with a window in a two-centred arch with a drip mould, topped by a short open-sided tower with a pyramidal roof and weathercock. The chancel has one three-sided window in a two-centred arch to the right.

Inside, the church features polychromatic brickwork with banding and diapering. The nave consists of three and a half bays, with one bay forming the crossing and a tall arch-braced roof. There is a four-bay arcade to the south aisle with two-centred arches on square piers that have moulded stone caps. A low stone-capped wall defines the crossing. The chancel has a two-centred chamfered chancel arch and consists of one bay.

Notable fittings include a three-light east window depicting the Ascension by Lavers and Barrard, a re-set carved 17th-century timber pulpit, and a re-set 11th-century stone font shaped like a cup, adorned with vine carvings around the top and rope and leaf carvings on the base.
